Adrian Lockhart was born, educated and became an artist in Tasmania. He started work at 15 as an artist with The Examiner in Launceston in 1963. A very influential mentor there opened up his mind to the world at large. Books, magazines and art from other places began to be part of his worldview. But he also began to see Tasmanian in a different way.
As a surfer, travelling every weekend and holidays around the state looking for waves, he got to know the island intimately. The shape of Tasmania has become a symbol for him of his origin, a great start to life, and of the world as captured by Gustave Courbet.
